Summer Conference Assistant

Basic Function

Sport Camps Conference Assistant (CA) is a live-in member of the Michigan State University Residence Education and Housing Services team.  Sport Camps participants will be housed in South Neighborhood and range in age from 8-18.  The Sport Camps staff will be primarily responsible for the care and safety of the participants, as well as offering programming and support throughout the camp. They will also aide in the daily security of the residence hall.  The CA also provides informational resources for all guests. There will be consistent and direct communication between the Sport Camps Coordinator, Community Director and Assistant Coordinators, and Operations Coordinators, so success by all departments and participants can be achieved.

CA Responsibilities

  • From June 2-August 1, 2014, CA staff will be scheduled to work with Sport Camps participants, including mandatory training June  2-6.
  • Work directly with campers aged 8-18
  • CAs will be scheduled to work a combination of shifts ranging from supervising conference participants in public areas and programming activities, to living on the floors with participants
  • The CA is responsible to perform daily security inspections of residential buildings assigned based upon established protocols and schedule.
  • During periods of conferences, CAs aid guests as an informational resource and will be scheduled during evening periods to be accessible to maintenance response needs and to facilitate emergency procedures.
  • The CA carries out evening activities as assigned by the Camp Director, Complex Director or the Sport Camps Conference Assistant Coordinator.

  • Conduct floor meetings the first night of all conferences, and as needed based on participants behavior.
  • Maintain floor bulletin boards with updated information for conference participants.
  • CAs connect with conference group leaders as a representative of the hall and interact in a professional manner with all guests. 
  • Perform basic clean-up, when necessary, after facilities staff leave for the day.
  • Must be available to assist with or handle any facility or participant emergency.
  • Follow all Michigan State University, and Residential and Hospitality Services, policies and procedures.
  • Must read Sport Camps e-mails and view website on a daily basis

CA Conditions of Employment

 Must be an MSU student.

  • Must be an MSU student
  • Must complete a background check.
  • Must be employed by Campus Living Services and Residence Life.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours a week.
  • Must reside in the hall assigned, with possible temporary relocation.
  • Must stay actively employed by the neighborhood to maintain a room within the hall.
  • Must reside overnight within their room when a camp is present. (Overnight work schedule will be managed by the complex Director or the Sport Camps Conference Assistant Coordinator.)
  • Required to provide duty coverage over holiday periods and weekends.

CA Compensation

Room for the summer, from approximately June 2 – August 1, 2014; Uniform (T-shirts only); Meals when the conference is in session and when the Sport Camps dining facility is open; Hourly rate of $8.43 per hour for scheduled shifts, Sport Camps CAs are required and paid to be involved in programs (dances, trips to the pool and game nights), you will be paid a flat rate of $26.00 for each overnight shift that you stay on the floor with the Sport Camps.
